How to Use an Edge Banding Machine
2026-03-01
Learn the machine, then run one test panel before production. Set glue temperature from the adhesive data sheet, match tape width to panel thickness, confirm infeed fence and pressure rollers, then watch end-cut, trim and scrape on the first door. Do not start a batch until that sample edge is clean.
Before you switch on
An automatic edgebander is a line of stations, not a single tool. Operators who skip setup spend the afternoon chasing “repair” faults that are actually temperature and tracking.
- Confirm panel thickness is inside the machine window (YongMao standard automatics publish 10–60 mm on most YM models; YM-468Z lists 15–80 mm).
- Choose tape: PVC / ABS / veneer, thickness 0.4–3 mm on the published tables.
- Heat the glue pot to the EVA or PUR range printed on the bag — not a neighbour’s rumour.
First-article sequence
- Jog the beam and check that pressure rollers contact the tape, not only the panel face.
- Set infeed fence so the panel edge is parallel to the glue roller.
- Run one offcut. Inspect glue wet-out, end-cut flushness, top/bottom trim, scrape and buff.
- Only then load production doors.
How the stations work
Glue applies adhesive to the tape and/or panel. End-cut removes front and rear overhang. Fine trim (and rough trim on YM-368 and up) brings the tape flush. Scrape removes the cutter mark. Buff cleans the face. Pre-mill and corner rounding are extra stations — see the pre-milling article.
Shutdown
Lower glue temperature for a pause; do not leave PUR sitting open. Clean squeeze-out while it is still plastic. Cover the pot. A clean machine is the cheapest “repair”.
